Patriots' Day, observed on the third Monday in April, is an officially designated parking holiday in the City of Boston. This classification means that standard time-limit requirements and fees at city-operated parking meters are not enforced. The day is treated similarly to other major holidays where meter enforcement is suspended.
However, the official "parking holiday" status is significantly impacted by the Boston Marathon, which is held on the same day. Due to the race, extensive and strictly enforced parking restrictions are implemented along the marathon route and in surrounding neighborhoods, particularly in the Back Bay, Kenmore Square, and the downtown area near the finish line. These temporary restrictions, indicated by "No Parking/No Stopping" signs posted days in advance, override the holiday meter status. All other parking regulations, such as those for resident permit zones, loading zones, or fire hydrants, remain in effect unless signs specifically state otherwise.
In practice, while parking meters are free, available street parking is extremely limited due to widespread closures and restrictions for the marathon. Vehicles found in violation of the temporary marathon-related signage are subject to immediate ticketing and towing. Therefore, drivers should prioritize observing posted temporary signs over the general holiday meter rule to avoid penalties.
